The Markus Scramble-net series type SCN will soon receive Lloyd’s Register (LR) Type Approval. Receiving full type approval from Lloyd’s Register demonstrates that the SCN Scramble Net series meets LR rules and provides operators with a proven means of recovering persons from the water in line with SOLAS Chapter III Regulation 17-1 requirements.
This approval means operators and crew can move forward confidently in their use of the MOB recovery system, knowing it conforms to industry standards for quality and compliance.
Working alongside Lloyd’s Register regulatory experts, Markus Lifenet underwent a rigorous approval process. The process involved extensive testing, design and specification reviews, installation and use controls, and more. According to Rakel Petursdottir, Managing Director at Markus Lifenet, the test cycles included UV resistance, temperature cycling, oil resistance, and saltwater spray testing.
These tests and successful Type Approval “ensure to the customer that the Markus products can withstand rough environments without any damage, fulfilling all quality standards they have been measured against,” said Rakel. After each test the parts were tensile tested according to ISO19898:2019 chapters 8.3 Load test, 8.4 Tensile testing of vertical sections and meshes in climbing devices, 8.6 Temperature cycling test, and 8.8 Test of material. As Rakel explained, the process “strengthens the customer’s trust that Markus products have always been manufactured with security of the user in mind.” Trials and testing took place in the UK and Iceland where Markus products are designed and manufactured.
Developed by Markus Lifenet, the Markus SCN series offers a compact, cost-effective, and globally trusted solution for vessel safety and MOB recovery, with no annual service required. The nets enable the recovery of an unconscious person from the water in a horizontal lift and can also be used as a scramble ladder, allowing one or multiple persons to climb safely back on board. Markus MOB Scramble Nets are durably built with high-strength polyester webbing, marine-grade plastic and metal components, and a weighted aluminum pipe for quick water entry. Unlike competitors, the SCN series can be sized and manufactured to any vessel.
“Markus took a deliberate approach to Type Approval. The nets have consistently been built to the same high standards, but the team waited until they were completely confident the design was fully optimized and proven in real offshore conditions before seeking formal certification,” said Michael Ritchie, President of Marine Rescue Technologies Inc. “For operators, this means they’re investing in a solution that is not only independently approved, but mature, field-tested, and built to the highest recognized safety and performance standards. The Lloyd’s Register Type Approval simply formalizes what operators already know – the Markus Scramble-net series represents the optimal solution for offshore recovery.”
Once presented to Markus Lifenet, the Lloyd’s Type Approval will be announced and made available to customers. To learn more about Markus Lifenet products and how they can improve your MOB recovery solution, contact Marine Rescue Technologies today.
