Maritime navigation has always evolved alongside technology, from lighthouses and lightships to GPS and electronic charts. AIS Aids to Navigation (physical, synthetic and virtual) represent the next chapter in that evolution.

AIS Aids to Navigation, specifically virtual and synthetic AtoNs, provide several important benefits, including no physical maintenance or buoy tending, immunity to storms, ice, and vessel strikes, and lower long-term operational costs. Moreover, long-term operational costs are lower.

Perhaps most importantly, electronic navigation aids allow authorities to respond much faster to changing waterway conditions than traditional buoy operations alone. This enables immediate deployment during emergencies and does not require risking unfavorable conditions. As the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Coast Guard continue expanding AIS-based navigation infrastructure, AIS AtoNs may be proving that some of the most effective navigation markers are the ones mariners never actually see floating in the water.

Despite all these advantages, there are also disadvantages and challenges to using AIS AtoNs.

While commercial industries may increasingly rely on electronic charting systems, small-time operators, personal boaters, and local fisherman, for example, may not. Some local boaters are not AIS-equipped and rely on physical markers alone.

In an effort to replace or discontinue 350 buoys in the Northeast in 2025, the USCG requested input from the public. As they wrote, “Public comment about specific buoy use is essential.” Local mariners know their waters better than anyone and the transition to AIS AtoN’s, especially virtual and synthetic, must take those realities into account.

On the flip side, and as we shared before, the realities of maintaining and replacing traditional physical buoys is costly. For many, the AIS Aids to Navigation evolution is welcome.
