Wescom unveils the new sMRT ALERT AIS DSC Class-M Man Overboard Beacon
The new sMRT ALERT AIS DSC man overboard beacon (MOB) combines AIS (Automatic Identification System), DSC (Digital Selective Calling) and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology. The sMRT ALERT is also one of the first in a range of new beacons to meet the enhanced Class-M standard.
Under the new standards, a Class-M AIS MOB device must have the capability to send an AIS signal so boats can locate the MOB in real-time, trigger a DSC alarm on VHF radios so the alert is audible rather than only visual, and receive confirmation that the distress signal has been acknowledged. This last feature gives MOB peace of mind and confidence knowing their distress signal has been picked up through two-way communication required under Class M.
About the size of a mobile phone, the sMRT ALERT also features automatic and manual water activation and multiple fixing options for easy life jacket integration. It is being praised for its user-focused safety features and innovative design. The fully waterproof alert earned a nomination and special mention at the prestigious DAME Design Awards during METSTRADE 2023. The sleep design and emergency features are complimented by the sMRT Beacon Management mobile app which provides valuable real-time insights and product health checks to ensure peak performance when it counts most.
FCC approvals are pending in the United States and are expected shortly. The sMRT ALERT AIS DSC is available through Marine Rescue Technologies Inc. as part of Wescom Group’s global distributor network.
