As a distributor and longtime partner of Markus Lifenet ehf, we are celebrating their recent success in receiving Lloyd’s Register (LR) Type Approval. On March 20, 2026, the Markus Scramble-net series was approved for use on ships and offshore installations classed with Lloyd’s Register.
In this article, we’re sharing why type approval matters and what it means for crew and operators. Check out our previous article for more on this big news and to hear directly from Rakel Petursdottir, Managing Director at Markus Lifenet and Michael Ritchie, President of Marine Rescue Technologies Inc.
What is Lloyd’s Register?
Lloyd’s Register is a maritime classification society whose aims are to enhance the safety of life, property and the environment by helping organizations meet and maintain engineering and safety standards for life-saving technology, among other items. Receiving full type approval from Lloyd’s Register demonstrates that Markus’ SCN Scramble Net series meets LR rules and requirements for recovering persons from the water. Working alongside Lloyd’s Register regulatory experts, Markus Lifenet underwent a rigorous testing process including UV resistance, temperature cycling, oil resistance, and saltwater spray testing.
What does approval mean for crew and operators?
Operators and crew can move forward confidently in their use of the Markus MOB recovery system, knowing it conforms to industry standards for quality and compliance. Lloyd’s Approval ensures the Markus SCN series is a proven recovery system. Moreover, crew and operators can be confident the design and parts are of the highest quality for durability in rough offshore conditions. Parts were tensile tested according to ISO19898:2019 chapters 8.3 Load test, 8.4 Tensile testing of vertical sections and meshes in climbing devices, 8.6 Temperature cycling test, and 8.8 Test of material. Independent LR testing confirms the Markus Scramble net series is an optimal and durable solution for offshore recovery.
As Michael Ritchie, President of Marine Rescue Technologies Inc. said, “The nets have consistently been built to the same high standards, but the team waited until they were completely confident the design was fully optimized and proven in real offshore conditions before seeking formal certification.” This approval not only represents compliance, but decades of devotion to offshore safety.
“For operators, this means they’re investing in a solution that is not only independently approved, but mature, field-tested, and built to the highest recognized safety and performance standards. The Lloyd’s Register Type Approval simply formalizes what operators already know – the Markus Scramble-net series represents the optimal solution for offshore recovery.”
Will the Markus SCN series work for you?
Unlike competitors, the SCN series can be sized and manufactured to any vessel. The Markus SCN series offers a compact, cost-effective, and globally trusted solution with no annual service required. The nets enable the recovery of an unconscious person from the water in a horizontal lift and can also be used as a scramble ladder, allowing one or multiple persons to climb safely back on board. If you are seeking reliability, compliance, durability, and dedicated manufacturers, the SCN series is your solution.
What’s next for Markus?
Markus Lifenet ehf plan to seek further LR approval for the Scramble-net series in compliance with the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Chapter III Regulation 17-1 for use on ships and offshore installations. Approval is anticipated because the Markus series has been designed and built in accordance with SOLAS III/17-1 for many years.
